Watch the hot mic moment with Ilia right after the individual competition - free skate - look it up. He makes a remark about - this would NOT have happened if the U.S. figure skating selection committee had simply allowed him to skate at the 2022 Olympics - he clearly qualified back then - he earned that spot at that Nationals in 2022. He was just 17 then - they felt he was too young and there were ridiculous politics. His dad did the right thing by quieting him here when he started to go off about it. But the US committee really screwed him over and should’ve sent him in 2022 for the experience - Ilia was right about that! There were 3 US spot - Nathan Chen won that year and earned the top spot - but Ilia was far better than the two other guys they sent that year - who weren’t anywhere close to being medal contenders. Ilia was clearly the up and comer then and they should have sent him - it very well could’ve avoided this situation here. Alyssa Liu was just 16 in 2022 and they rightfully sent her to the Olympics that year - and she got that valuable Olympic experience which clearly paid off later in 2026. It’s a shame the U.S. committee lacked the vision and spine to do the same for Ilia. I truly believe this situation could’ve been avoided. They need to remove the politics from that U.S. selection committee and make it fair. Think about the future and not paying tribute and favor to their personally favorite skaters who aren’t even medal contenders.

They shouldn’t have made him do the free skate. Yuma didn’t and rested up, I think Ilia needed the same time. Respect to him for doing it and helping the, win gold but he needs to set some healthy boundaries.
