@vicderbyshire: The #government says it’s going to make changes to the #student #loan system in #England. How much do you owe & is it going down or up?
I started with £80,000, 13 years after starting uni, I now have £122,000.

Take out a loan for a house, holiday a car or anything you pay interest. Pay less than the interest and your debt goes up.
That said at 17 this should absolutely be made clear.
In too many cases it feels teens are being sold a dream that often doesn't exist in reality as the high paid opportunities aren't there.

Both my children have been through university. Both graduated with zero debt…..well done Scottish Government. Both Children worked while at university so no maintenance loans needed. That’s quite an advantage over English students!

So of if I take out a mortgage for 100000 (example) I have to pay interest on that and that can change. What’s the difference with the student loan? Do they not pay interest on the loan? Genuine question as not clear what’s going on, thanks.

how can anyone say this is fair? At some point the government is going to switch up (again) and student debt and repayments will be applicable against borrowing, rent, application, and mortgages.

I am GenX I got a grant and I would like to see you interview 60 y/o MPs and ask them why it was ok for them to get a grant but not ok for their children and grandchildren - despite the fact that Scotland can still provide grants.

If you’re only paying the minimum which is less than the interest charged then obviously the amount outstanding will go up. Like those people that only pay the minimum credit card payment.

Yet again, the system is designed to keep the poor in their place. If you have rich parents who can afford to sub you through uni you’re fine. Meanwhile someone who needs to borrow for their education faces a lifetime of reduced income, impacting their already impossible task of affording a house and living expenses. These young people have gone to uni to enable them to do the jobs we need for a healthy economy and yet they are being punished for doing so.

Need to keep the pressure up on this or the next government. Someone needs to make wiping the interest a policy pledge

All the way through school, we were told we HAVE to get a degree to get a good job, now that i finally have a degree, my job isnt paid that much higher than minimum wage. No problem in paying what I owe, but its not like i can sell my degree at a higher value than i can with a house. If i knew then what i know now, probably would have followed dad’s advice and found a trade!
