According to mythology, during a period of severe famine and disease, the selfless king sacrificed his life by offering this jewel and in some versions, his own head to the gods to save his suffering subjects. The lake is believed to have been formed at this site of sacrifice, and local folklore maintains that the water remains miraculously clear because sacred birds pick out any fallen leaves.
