@jjfadaka: I remember thinking my mum was out of her mind for leaving London and all of our family, friends and support system behind. It’s only until a decade later I realised she had no choice - the regeneration of London saw Lewisham turned into a Frankenstein borough of upwardly mobile city workers living on top of the multicultural working class community that had built it from the ground up
what about the communities that was in Lewisham before the Nigerians

ahhhh growing up in lewisham... yh they moved us to birmingham. didnt realise mine was not a unique experience, going back as an adult is crazy cuz of the gentrification, we count all the shops that closed down which is like 90%

Gentrifier = white person with a job. They are also moving for economic reasons.

I think it’s very complex my love. I have friends grandparents/parents from Croydon and Lewisham who lived there in the 1940s/50s way before we had black people living in these areas. They say it was extremely different. Are these people just coming back to their roots? Or were they regentrified and then regentrified again ?

Also sorry I’m not saying gunshots are exciting, I mean Lewisham/peckham had a soul and was a complex, real place holding multiple lives

Exact same as east ldn, I was born in hackney and live in tower hamlets and I always feel like I’m in an episode of black mirror the area and the community has completely changed sadly 😔

I 100% agree with you. I’m a born and bred North Londoner and it has changed so much. 15 years ago, the middle class wouldn’t dream of living where I do and now all the gentrifyers have taken over. I used to live so close to my cousins, uncles, aunties and now know my nephew won’t because he’s in Surrey, my other brother lives in Essex and my other lives in Barnet. So sad really

I had to move away from my part of the Uk to come to London to get a job as the country is so London centric - long way from family and networks.

Communities change all the time due to economics and migration. Your community was no more special or deserving to be preserved than those it replaced.
