@maisonrickie: Today, we address on of the most common criticisms I get on my page: to “just be yourself”, why care about distinction, just do you. And while I agree, to an extent, I don’t think people realize how difficult that solution can be for some people. Even if you “know” who you are, do you really? Did you choose to be that way? For some, maybe. But in this video, we explore this topic a little deeper. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! And no malice intended if I chose to use your comment on screen.

Basically what Miranda told Andrea in this scene of The Devil wears Prada! She thinks she’s above it by not caring but her not making an active decision on it doesn’t exempt her from the fact that her life is affected by it, things were pre determined by the system (fashion industry)- whether she likes it or not

It’s giving Kamala’s coconut tree, where we exist within the context of everything around us. I think “being yourself” is just giving yourself permission to accept your natural inclinations without the pressure or perceived judgment of others, or not living according to someone else’s context or approval of your choices.

in the immortal words of the late Neil Pert, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice". the funny thing is, you can be authentic to yourself if you accept that what you are isnt a static thing. it will morph and change as you live.

It is important to be aware of it, be conscious about the invisible guidelines that humanity lives by.. just don’t be completely ruled by it.

I hate to say it but the world is shallow. Performance is necessary. Performance does not mean you’re being inauthentic either. Just takes some discernment.

This is so true because everything is learnt habits, language and culture. We can only use how we want to be based on the version of the world we gave ourselves permission to explore

Related-unrelated, but do you know how much you’ve opened the flood gates on Bourdieu? So many creators are talking about him now and a lot of the videos are obviously influenced (sometimes exact copies) by you 😅

I agree, living is performance, but the question would be if one is conscious of the roles he is performing or just living in an autopilot

I wonder how it applies to neurodivergent individuals, actually. Because, while the advice to "just be yourself" is never a good one for us social-interactions-wise, the whole masking aspect of our experience DOES, in fact, imply that there's this other, purer, somehow more authentic, unmasked version of us, that isn't influenced by how we were brought up, but simply by design of our brain wiring. Dare I say, this "me" keeps slipping into every single interaction I have despite me sometimes desperately trying to keep them out. And if those traits I have are "fixed" in that sense, would it truly only constitute "me" in a social context? I dare propose that we're somewhat above all this.
