My son had a public defender at one point. This man was so prepared (didn’t have that experience when we had hired an attorney at another point), recognized that addiction was the real issue & worked tirelessly to get my son help vs jail time. He was also incredibly compassionate & nonjudgmental. You are SO right!

As former LE, I loved our public defender. Even though he was always overloaded and overworked he still gave his best for every single client.

reporters letting their emotional views bleed through in their work. everyone deserves defense and these defenders are more than qualified unlike what the media shows. I dont know what was in the reporters heart but there are enough people that feel alleged murderers and the like do not deserve qualified defense and those views do not need to be bolstered by the media

Correction: federal public defenders aren’t some of the best public defenders in the world—the are some of the best LAWYERS in the world. I was a damn good federal public defender. I always giggled when a client asked what would happen if he hired a “real lawyer” — and so did the prosecutor 😉

The only time I roll my eyes at the idea of a public defender is when someone who has the funds to pay for an attorney, all of a sudden says they don’t have the funds. I always suspect they are hiding wealth just so everyone else has to pay. I absolutely believe public defenders are great. I absolutely believe some folks are indigent and cannot afford AND are entitled to one. But when it comes to someone who is middle class or upper class, I think they are trying to avoid paying for one. I’m open to listening , though! Perhaps I don’t have all the information.
