Living together in HDBs is one excellent strategy. Many HDBs are like little microcosms where people don’t only live next to each other but the ground floor may typically host a hawker centre where everyone dines together and experiences each other’s cuisines. There’s a little playground where the kids all play together and mothers sit and talk. There is usually a small medical clinic and a small grocery store. In the west we talk about 15 minute cities, an HDB is a two minute city. Loop in as well all young men do their national service together and form tight bonds that way.
