@talkingcities: Do men and women experience walking differently? Evidence from the study “Gender-Based Heat Map Images of College Campus Walking Settings” (Chaney et al., 2024) suggests that we do #urbanplanning #urbandesign #publichealth

What a good idea for a study. I hope they do this study again with a bigger and more random sample!

Be interesting to see this study expanded to see if there are any patterns from socio-economic, racial, religious/secular demographics and how they perceive these spaces.

I immediately identified the open area as the bigger risk vs the staircase and then you said you’d expect the staircase to be worse…

This difference is something that many people understand through experience, but it’s super valuable to see it represented in data as well

If anything- I’d say it being a familiar college campus adds to the studies validity! I get it’s generally considered a limitation- but for theoretical purposes, being somewhere familiar means we could expect people to look at the path ahead regardless of gender due to knowing where the person is walking. We can rule out looking around for the purpose of being lost/finding where the person needs to go, which further lends to the validity of womens’ pattern of scanning for safety.

The larger question is how does this change our brains and how do those changes effect the brains structure and processes? There's so much more to study and dive into with these limited results.
