Day rate is wild. Should just charge per job

When you price a job though don’t you work out how long it will take you roughly and work that on what you want a day?

I price like this, day rate pays your bills, pricing accordingly to the job builds a business , I’d like to see how you breakdown pricing a kitchen, bathroom etc

my local electrician is like £40/hr but rarely charges full a full hour, he does it in 30 min increments & if it’s 5 min job half the time it’s a pint & materials

There’s people who really don’t know their numbers & constantly undercharge & undervalue the outcome. We see it all the time in our world. Some people work for themselves others are businesses, not the same thing at all. We charge for the outcome , the ongoing training & giving the very best customer experience from beginning to end.

I’m really struggling. I’ve just gone on my own so when I got to look at jobs I always do it on how long it will take me? Then I find my prices are too high because some jobs might take me longer. Am I doing it wrong? How should I be pricing jobs?

You always need to add on company profit too. Labour/ materials/fuel ware and tear on tools van etc and then at least 20% profit on that. Otherwise you won’t survive

I’ll always price jobs for the outcome rather than per day. However I’ve always got a set figure in mind that I try to make sure I’m earning per day across the term of a job, without pricing it as a day rate. Sounds complicated but I’ve found it to work well

When i was still fitting, every Tuesday or Wednesday, when the plasterer or spark was in the kitchen, i would do paperwork, designs or measures. Saved me having to do it at night after work.

I completely agree. Too many companies rely on charging a day rate, and that kind of short-term mindset makes it difficult to build a sustainable business. Long-term success requires focusing on value, strategy, and strong client relationships not just billing for time.
