🚨Roy Keane on Bruno Fernandes’ start to the Premier League season with Manchester United: “Bruno Fernandes, what a player, man! He somehow sneaked his way into breaking the assist record last season, sneaked into the Ballon d’Or conversation, and now we’re supposed to pretend everything is fine because he wears the captain’s armband. Against Tottenham, there were complaints about players showing frustration and leaving without greeting the fans or signing autographs. Sir Alex Ferguson always told us that no matter how badly we played, the fans deserved our respect. They pay their money, travel across the country and stand behind the club. When you’re captain of Manchester United, your responsibility extends beyond the pitch. The fans deserve accountability, not silence. Then we watched him against Leeds, and honestly, I was shocked. Someone sent me his statistics, and I had to look at them twice. One shot on target, one off target and one blocked, giving him a shot accuracy of just 33%. He managed only one touch in the opposition’s box, completed none of his two attempted dribbles and recorded just six passes into the final third. Those are worrying numbers for a player expected to create chances and lead Manchester United when the team needs him most. Now, I’m not saying Bruno is a bad footballer. That would be ridiculous. He’s talented, creative and capable of producing moments that win games. But talent cannot become an excuse every time the performance falls below expectations. When you wear that armband, people are entitled to judge you by a higher standard. My problem isn’t Bruno having a bad game; every player has bad games. It’s watching the captain struggle to control his emotions while the performances fail to match the responsibility he carries. And another thing that confuses me is how many different combinations we’ve tried around Bruno. He played alongside Paul Pogba, and the partnership never consistently delivered the balance we wanted. We tried him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Antony and Juan Mata, and we kept searching for the right formula. Casemiro arrived with all his experience, but we still saw problems with the midfield balance. At times, it looked as though Casemiro had to focus on his own responsibilities while Bruno operated in his own way. You cannot keep changing the players around one man without examining whether his role is part of the problem. Now we have Youri Tielemans alongside him, and we’re seeing questions about Tielemans’ mobility, his legs and his ability to cover ground. At Aston Villa, we saw a midfielder capable of dictating play and distributing the ball within a structured system. At Manchester United, those qualities can become less visible when the midfield lacks balance. Tielemans deserves criticism if his performances are below standard, but we must also ask why a midfielder who looked comfortable at Villa appears to be struggling here. Is it simply his physical condition, or is the system exposing weaknesses that were less noticeable before? When you’ve tried Pogba, Ronaldo, Antony, Mata, Casemiro and now Tielemans, you cannot automatically blame every player who struggles alongside Bruno. At some point, you have to examine the system and the captain himself. A great footballer should adapt to different teammates, but a great leader must also help those teammates perform at their best. And the most worrying thing is that some Manchester United supporters defend every poor performance simply because the player involved is Bruno Fernandes. I want Bruno to succeed because United need his quality, but supporting a player doesn’t mean ignoring his mistakes. Being captain is about more than assists, goals and wearing an armband. If Bruno wants to be remembered alongside the great Manchester United captains, he must show consistency, discipline and accountability.
