shame on baftas for leaving that in there, but it’s also odd to not apologize. not for having tourettes but for the slur specifically. shouldn’t ever have to feel sorry for a condition you can’t control but for the harm it might have caused.

im 15 and i got diagnosed w tourettes at 10 yrs old. i absolutely LOVED his book, it made me cry so many times, every chapter made me cry. i was so excited for the movie to come out and it was perfect. im so upset about how people reacted to this, hes literally there for a movie he made about tourettes, obviously hes gonna tic 😭

Here are my thoughts on the situation. I don’t think TS people should be expected nor demanded to apologise. An acknowledgment of hurt, sympathy & explanation from a TS person to the people that felt hurt, at most, is more than enough instead of an apology. We shouldn’t expect nor demand a TS person to apologise for tics as that would be unfair & unrealistic. Now, if a TS person wants to throw in a little “sorry” along with their explanation, that’s fine, BUT should be of their own accord. I feel for all 3 of those men.

Hey queen, been following since like 2019 but even though it’s wasn’t intentional it was still very offensive, I just have a feeling that he said it involuntarily cause he was thinking about it, and that’s what makes me mad, I may be wrong, please educate me if I am but I think we black people should be able to express our feelings about it even though it wasn’t intentional

I understand wanting an apology. That’s valid but people who are ONLY blaming John and not the baftas or the BBC is kinda insane. They had the choice to cut it out or not sit him next to or in front of a microphone whilst being aware that he has tics. The hate John has been receiving for something that he’s not in control of makes me so sad for everyone with tourette’s :(

It’s the BAFTAS fault they assured him his tics wouldn’t cause an issue and they were capable of editing out his other tics they sat him in front of a microphone after he expressed concern for his disability and they IGNORED him and left in him saying a slur hurting the black community and his image he needs to sue

People shouldn’t be hating on the man himself as he cannot control it, has apologised for it and left almost immediately after but we should hate on the fact BBC let that be aired whilst everything else (like free Palestine) got censored 🤷♀️
