“You don’t come out of Worcester and become lace curtain Irish just cuz you move to Brookline” is so true and niche to MA.

He is talking SPECIFICALLY of the diaspora. If you’re in Ireland and “don’t have a clue what he’s talking about” it’s because you are not involved. This isn’t about Ireland.

In Brooklyn NY as an Irish kid it was Lace Curtain Irish vs Shanty Irish. As a kid I was like, “whaaat???” My mother always said we were lace curtain Irish. Weird

Conan’s mother was one of the first few female Yale law school graduates. She was a lawyer and raised 6 kids. 🥰

My Mom used the term “lace curtain Irish” to refer to snobs. I knew we were borderline Shanty.

Why are there Irish people from Ireland watching this video of two guys with American accents talking about living in Massachusetts and thinking they are talking about being Irish in Ireland.

If you’re born in America and growing up in Boston, you’re not Irish, you’re American.

To all the Irish people not understanding: the U.S. is a nation of immigrants. As such when we are *inside* the U.S. we sometimes talk about our heritage in terms of ancestry; such as Italian-American, African-American, etc…we are well aware that it is a different culture than those in Europe. Just like being from NY can be dramatically different from being from Texas. But if you were both raised, say “Irish catholic” there would be a similar cultural upbringing.

My mother told us we were lace curtain Irish, not shanty Irish. She’d flip out if condiment bottles were on the table.

Genuine question for Irish (born & bred) folks in the comments: when, say, an Indian family moves to Ireland, do you demand that they drop all claims to Indian identity? Can a first generation immigrant still identify as Indian, talk about their unique experiences as an Irish person of Indian descent, take pride in their heritage, and continue passing down cultural traditions? Do you reckon folks “born & bred” in India scoff and say “you’re not Indian, you’re Irish”? In the States we have terms for that: erasure. Forced assimilation. For as white as I am, Mexicans don’t “dispute” my Mexican heritage nearly as vociferously as Irish people dispute my Irish heritage 😂 I’ll still keep my St. Brigid’s cross right next to my Talavera pottery 🤷‍♀️
