Once widespread during the Mesozoic, the genus’ range has been restricted to the southern hemisphere in places like South America and Australia and are now endangered in the wild. They are easily unmistakable for their broad, spiky needles and umbrella shaped canopy when they are fully grown. The Monkey Puzzle earned its namesake in 1850s when after Sir William Molesworth invited his friends for a dinner party and one friend named Charles Austin noticed William’s Specimen and commented,”It would puzzle a monkey to climb that”. Hopefully, my seed specimens might grow and flourish with the right care and protection.
