@trial_trackers: Sept. 4, 2024 started like any other school day at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. 14-year-old Colt Gray rode the bus for 12 minutes after hiding an AR-15-style rifle inside his backpack. Surveillance shows him entering the school and heading to first period. In class, he asked how the school would handle an active shooter — a question his teacher reported. Before leaving, she asked about an item sticking out of his backpack. He said he would show her later. In second period, he adjusted his backpack for several minutes before leaving for the restroom. Around the same time, another student with a similar name, Kolton Gray, also left class. An assistant principal initially retrieved the wrong student’s backpack. School resource officers entered the restroom looking for Kolton — while Colt remained inside. At approximately 10:20 a.m., Colt exited the restroom wearing yellow gloves and carrying his backpack. He attempted to reenter the classroom. When a classmate refused to open the locked door, he turned and fired into a nearby room. A student and a math teacher were killed. Another teacher was shot in the leg and crawled back into his classroom, securing the door. Staff activated panic buttons. Students called 911. Resource officers responded within minutes.
