Does your baby only look one direction? If your baby prefers looking to one side, know this is common in early infancy. Sometimes it’s just a positional preference. But sometimes it can be related to muscle tightness called torticollis. Here’s the key difference: If your baby can turn both directions comfortably but prefers one, it’s often habit or positioning. If your baby seems unable to comfortably turn both ways, you notice a consistent head tilt, or you’re starting to see a flat spot — that’s a great thing to mention to your pediatrician. Sometimes muscle tightness in the neck (like torticollis) can contribute, and early support is VERY effective. If a baby has torticollis, the tight muscle is usually the sternocleidomastoid, or SCM. If the right side is tight? Their ear tilts to the right…But their chin turns to the left. So they prefer looking AWAY from the tight muscle. When in doubt, just stretch both sides.
