if you get eye level with your blade on the stone you and lay the blade flat against the stone and as your watching the edge of the blade lift the spine angling the blade till you can see 0 shadow under the edge and feel the edge seat on the stone follow that edge as you go down the stone on both sides evenly and you will make a knife sharp without a guide

I bought one a few weeks ago and it does an amazing job, I love it! I go heel to point btw. probably work just as well going point to heel, but heel to point is just how grandpa taught me on a flat stone.
