This isn't entirely true. Many family businesses succeed, partly because of cheap (or free!) labour immediate family can provide, and also because there's effectively no separation between work and family life, families can be drawn closer together as a unit (rather than one member vanishing for untold hours to bring home the bacon on their own). When I started my business, my retired mother helped by organising my books. I'm in an industry where most of my friends have been made through work, so I already understand their work style when I've brought them on board for projects.
