@varangslav: Sicanje (also called bocanje or traditional south slavic tattooing) is an old tattooing tradition practiced mainly among Catholic Bosniaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina and parts of Dalmatia, but it is was also practiced in other south slavic countries. Its origins are probably pre - christian. You can see a lot of slavic pagan symbols (sun, branches, …), but also crosses which suggests that this became a tradition, even after the slavs have converted to christianity. It was also used by others like Celts, Thracians,…It was widely practiced during the Ottoman Empire, but declined in the 20th century. Today it’s perserved as cultural heritage and tradition. Mostly girs were tattooed, but als at a young age. Some people say that it was used to show their identity, prevent abduction or conversion and to preserve family’s identity. However this is not proven. #bosnia #slavic #tradition #symbol #tattoo
