But modern research shows that starting hormone therapy later in life is not automatically harmful, especially when therapy is individualized and medically supervised. Large population studies of older women show continued hormone use can be associated with lower mortality and reduced risk of multiple diseases — and major menopause organizations no longer support strict age cutoffs. Translation? Hormones don’t have an expiration date… and neither does your quality of life.
