On New Year’s Day 1953, Hank Williams was traveling to a concert in Ohio when his driver noticed he had gone silent. Somewhere along the highway, Williams had died. A coroner ruled it heart failure, with alcohol and morphine in his system. In the final months of his life, his body was breaking down. He suffered from chronic back pain. He had been fired from the Grand Ole Opry. He was missing shows, drinking heavily, and relying on painkillers just to get through the night. At the time of his death, he was being driven through a snowstorm, with alcohol and painkillers in his system, trying to make another show. He had risen fast. By his early twenties, he was already a country music icon. Songs like “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” and “Hey Good Lookin’” made him a national star.
