This reminds me of how Teddy Roosevelt had a habit of walking directly in a straight line to his destination rather than following roads. While he was president everyone from his own administration to foreign diplomats knew to wear sturdy boots when they were with him. Which was because they might be led on a spontaneous hike through the middle of a swamp.
