I have never seen a half couch in person. In Southeastern PA they are ALL full couch.

Coffins have a full lid. But as a mortician explained to me, the poor people did not want others to see that they were not wearing shoes in the coffin. So about the Civil War, they invented the split top, so the poor would look good from the waist up and did not have to wear shoes. Fun fact: my mother’s not wearing shoes, she’s wearing cute little pink slippers in the casket
