The Spinal Galant reflex is a primitive reflex that we are born with. It emerges at around 20 weeks in utero to help babies wiggle their way through the birth canal with hip movements in response to touch along their spine. This reflex should integrate (go away) by 9 months of age allowing for more controlled and deliberate movements. If this reflex doesn’t integrate as it normally should, it can lead to challenges such as bedwetting, difficulties with focusing, and fidgeting. Imagine trying to stay still or pay attention when even a light touch (even from a shirt or a tag) makes your body react involuntarily. This can be incredibly distracting and uncomfortable for a child, impacting their ability to focus on tasks and causing unnecessary stress. In this video, you can see a contraction on the left side of the spine when the Spinal Galant reflex is tested - this is considered a positive response. This patient has issues with bed wetting, constant fidgeting in school, and difficulty with focusing. He also has other retained primitive reflexes that are contributing to his difficulty with focusing. We are working with him to help integrate his spinal galant reflex and other retained primitive reflexes.
