NATO soldiers have to carry a similar amount of gear. The reason they don't place an emphasis on being big and bulky is because when you are out field for weeks on end you won't be able to sustain the bulk because you won't be able to eat enough calories from the ration packs. Most of the people I met who spent time in Recon, Sniper or SAS weren't big or bulky.

Maybe it's makes for a good blending with allies. Mix the strength of Americans with the endurance of Europeans and you have a complete package working together. They are 2 halves of a whole military union.
