It happened when Clinton signed the telecommunications act in the 90s, which allowed mega corps to buy up local radio, and have a mega corps decide what 1000’s of stations play. It went from DJs discovering talent to spreadsheets deciding what’s played.

IDK, rock has been on a fairly steady decline in quality since the mid seventies. A few blips of absolute greatness, a couple of years that a couple of bands were great, but the only new music I listen to is rap and bluegrass

Rock had a fantastic run in the 2000s with White Stripes, Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Hives, Arctic Monkeys, KOL, The Shins, Frank Ferdinand, Jet, among many many many more. Cool shit in the more punk world then too. iPod era is underrated.

I don’t think it was some wizard behind the curtain moment. Late 90s and early 2000s demographics shifted and the money followed youth culture. Hip hop wasn’t just music. It was fashion, language, sneakers, movies, sports, advertising. Labels and networks like MTV go where the cultural gravity and ad dollars are. It wasn’t kill rock. It was follow the biggest, youngest audience.
