@orthodoxcopticmoments: Pope Shenouda III pope of the Oriental Orthodox Coptic church reaponds to Jehova witnesses and seventh day adventists claim that Jesus Christ is Archangel Michael #orthodoxchristian #jehovahswitness #adventist #popeshounda #apologetics

The Exegetical Christian :

What a terrible piece of exegesis and a completely disingenuous way to treat other people’s beliefs. Do Jehovah’s Witnesses and Adventists not know Hebrews 1? It says Christ became better than the angels. Why is that? Because He received something, the name. It is that name that made Him better than them. Does Hebrews 1 say Jesus was better in general? No, it doesn’t. Did he forget the part where Christ was made lower than the angels? So who is the one who does not know Hebrews 1? Why was Jesus lower than the angels? Because He became a man. That is a clear parallel to Psalm 8:5, which shows that humanity is lower than the spiritual beings, the elohim. That is why to none of the angels did God say, “You are my Son,” because they did not empty themselves to take on human existence as Jesus did (Philippians 2). Jesus was not an angel as a human. Yet the Coptic Church holds the position that Jesus was the Angel of the Lord. These people are completely confused. Pope Shenouda III, one of the most influential leaders of the Coptic Orthodox Church, cannot properly read Hebrews 1 in context? People rarely question figures like that simply because they wear religious garments and carry titles. Jehovah’s Witnesses and Adventists are wrong about many things, but that does not mean they are wrong about everything. If someone is going to critique their theology, they should at least represent their position accurately and demonstrate a basic understanding of the relevant Scriptures, so they do not appear like the person described in Proverbs 18:13. I am not going to rebut every individual point here, but this is genuinely poor exegesis.
