It’s still unclear what Alex takes an explanation to be. He seems to treat explanations as categorically distinct from descriptions, but every explanation is, in essence, a certain kind of description. In science, descriptions typically have two inseparable aspects: predictive power and explanatory power. Explanatory power can be understood in terms of how many and how well a description answers relevant “why” and “how” questions, relative to the number and weight of assumptions it must introduce to do so. However, when we turn to the origin of the most fundamental level of reality, such as the laws of nature themselves, we run into a problem of underdetermination. At that point, we can only introduce metaphysical assumptions, and many competing assumptions offer comparable explanatory reach while remaining largely insulated from empirical evidence.

but o connors metaphor IS the real categorical error. science does indeed cite causes, whose working is described by laws - but laws are shorthand for causal properties. ofc science cannot explain why causal properties are exactly as they are - but neither can theism, because there is no real difference between saying "the world is like this just because it is" and "...because god made it so". with god, we only personify or hypostasize the groundlessness of the world as it is, we find a answer which is not an answer to a badly formulated question.

This highlights the lack of understanding in theists as his statement is about how science isn’t an answer to how something exists but merely observations of how it works to the point of prediction. At no point does he make the assertion that something makes it happen. It’s not him saying he believes in any god.

idk where people get this idea from that science doesn't explain, it explains everything but the fundamentals of the universe, which is actually an indicator that there is no god, BECAUSE, explaining that why it's the way it is would've meant it could've been different. So basically it shows that the universe is it

We have examples of authors that write books, we have book publishers and the printing press. If there were examples of universe factories then we can make such models of how a go creates universes we don’t and this is why this analogy fails.
