I'm no master by any means, but the biggest advice I always give people is writing movie scenes to train yourself. Put on a scene from a movie you think has good dialogue and just write that scene like you're writing a chapter of your novel. It helped me so much!

I read my dialogue aloud to make sure it sounds like real people

Do you have any recommendations for books that best exemplify realistic dialogue?

can a character say words like “gonna” or “wanna” in dialogue or should we still write going to/want to ?

This was very informative. I’m writing my first romantic fantasy series and I’m quickly realizing I don’t have a clue. 😂

I agree with individual voices, but sometimes dialogue can be a way to show connection between characters (longtime friends and familial relations) through shared phrasing or patterns of speech- patterns of speech are learned somewhere👍

Punctuation around dialogue is my biggest issue! I’m getting better about it as I write and self edit. Otherwise, I’ve been told I write good and realistic dialogue and my characters feel distinct.

I used to use em dash when the characters dialogue gets interrupted or cut off but now I’m terrified because of the association of the Em dash with AI … any tips on how to avoid the Em dash and still show that the dialogue is being interrupted or cut off 😅

What about the "I'm scared," dialogue, is it alright to use in certain scenarios like a character is showing their vulnerable state to someone they can be open towards?

I base my characters off real people I know and so they usually sound a lot like those real people and I play the conversation in my head like movies.
