@thevagdoc: There’s so much conflicting chatter about dementia and will hormone replacement therapy help or hurt your risks of developing it in your future! What’s the real story? #thevagdoc **** Can HRT protect you from Alzheimer’s dementia or not?
My mom was born in 1953, had a total hysterectomy in her early 30s, suffered greatly with early menopause, was placed on synthetic hormones in her 40s and diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at 54. Sadly she lived a very difficult life for 10 years after her diagnosis of ALZ. I’m doing everything I can to prevent this from happening to me!! I’m 50, on HRT, eating real food, feeding my brain, and exercising daily.

Have you talked about ADHD relationship to perimenopause? I feel like my ADHD symptoms are 100 times worse and I’m worried I’m not gonna be able to hold my job.

My Mom’s Neurologist firmly believes had she been on HRT, she could have delayed the onset of dementia as much as 10 years. She developed osteoporosis in her early 60’s. He said hormones play an essential role in brain health and without them the brain ages rapidly. He told me to start HRT immediately. I was 52 at the time.

You kind of cut off there though. What’s rolling the dice? HRT or not using it?

When you say: “when hrt is added 10+ years out” you mean 10 years or so POST MENOPAUSE, right?

How do we know when if we’ve had a hysterectomy? I had a hysterectomy at 39 but didn’t start taking estrogen until I was 52. I don’t take testosterone or progesterone at all.

Can you speak about the APOE4 gene? I read a study (I think it was 2023) that HRT helped those gene carriers specifically. Have there been updates?

I couldn't get my doc to agree to hrt until almost 10 yrs after my hysterectomy. So that's a bit concerning

When you say that is doesn’t help if you start HRT “10 years out” do you mean before full menopause?
