@livevirtualguide: When the church of San Nicola in Carcere was built in the 1100s, it incorporated three Ancient Roman temples from the 3rd century BC! These temples were: Temple of Spes, Temple of Juno, Temple of Janus. The church was built on top of the basements of these temples, which you can see outside the church, as well as inside. If you walk underground you will see the ancient Roman street level between the temples, and the actual basements of the temples! Imagine the ancient Roman people walking right there! 🤯 When the church was built, this underground section became a cemetery. That is why you can find some human bones too. another tip for people who like to visit underground stuff, go to the Catacombs of San Sebastiano and San Callisto, a must see for people who love that stuff. And a nice bonus is that it is situated on the Via Appia, so you can combine it with a nice walking trip along the Via Appia

There are tons of these all over the city! The Basilica di San Crisogono has a really cool and not commonly visited underground too. And the maestro who lets you in I have adopted as my uncle.

About 10 years ago, my husband and I flew into Rome and we were totally exhausted. We couldn’t sleep so we walked by this church, and the janitor was outside sweeping the sidewalk. He asked if we would like to come inside and see some real Roman history. He walked us inside the church and down the steps, and we were absolutely blown away by what he was showing us! I can’t believe that you made a video of the same church!

Saw this a couple yrs ago, it's got like 2 or 3 underground levels that they kept building on top of. Also an aqueduct runs under it. Really cool.

It’s surrounded by safety fence just now as they are working on strengthening the foundation. Don’t know how long the work will go on 🤷🏼
