I never stopped training when I was ill. If anything, I became even more determined to prove that Crohn’s disease wasn’t going to take that part of me. I trained hard, competed and pushed through days when my body was already dealing with inflammation, medication, poor recovery and everything else that came with being seriously unwell. Looking back, I don’t regret exercising. But I do wish someone had taught me that being able to push through doesn’t always mean pushing through is the right decision. Training is a stressor. A useful one, when your body has the resources to adapt to it. But when you’re already carrying inflammation, poor sleep, under fuelling, psychological stress or inadequate recovery, the same session can create a very different overall demand. That’s the part I understand differently now. Exercise doesn’t need to disappear when your health changes, but the dose needs to change. Sometimes progress means pushing harder. Sometimes it means reducing volume. Sometimes it means changing intensity. Sometimes it means mobility, walking or targeted strength work instead of chasing another PB. That understanding became the Level 1–3 approach I now use with clients, because there’s a huge difference between maintaining movement and refusing to adapt because slowing down feels like weakness. Research in IBD supports appropriately prescribed exercise for physical fitness, muscle function and bone health, particularly in stable disease. The lesson I wish I’d understood earlier is that resilience isn’t proving how much your body can tolerate. It’s knowing how to give your body enough challenge to adapt without constantly exceeding what it can recover from. DM HEAL for 1:1 support building training around your health instead of treating the two as separate things. #CrohnsDisease #StrengthTraining #IBD #ExerciseMedicine #LifestyleMedicine
