Gen X and I answer right after the 12 squared because I learned my squares up to 12 along with the rest of the multiplication table. I don’t write out 12x12 because I already know that’s what 12 squared is.

Gen X. I was taught both. The second was used only after you reduced what was in parentheses to its simplest form and still had an equation in the parentheses rather than a simple number.
