These are really old school tactics. Most sellers today will tell you to take a hike and won’t negotiate if you lowball them. I prefer to make a quick connection with the seller, have a pre-purchase inspection and have the mechanic list all the legitimate issues with the vehicle and the cost of the repairs/maintenance.

Ok. It’s just m me. I’ve only bought 1 used car in my life. The second one, A Camry 2015 xle. Bought at a Toyota dealer, 3.5 years ago. The car looked like it came off the assembly line. Outside and inside. Checked the Carfax. The wiring harness was replaced. Apparently some critter decided to make it home at some point. 112,000 km. About 68,000 miles. New brakes, new tires, new wiper blades, new fillers… all fluids changed except for the transmission. Like it has a lifetime transmission oil…lol. I changed it. So, I’ve had it for 3.5 years. Needed to replace the battery a few weeks ago. Other than that, oil changes. Personally, if I ever replace this car I’m going to a dealer. Buying a Toyota…. Going to a Toyota dealer. I’m never buying private. Peace of mind has a price.

Nahhh. I bought a 1997 Honda Civic with 128,000 (clean title) that was priced at $1,200. No way in hell would I have asked if he'd take $200 for it and miss out on a deal like that. He had like 20 people messaging him at once about it. I would have been stupid not to buy it. 🙄 And it would have been rude or insulting of me to ask lower.
