people think the surveillance state just POP UP out of no where because they dont pay attention, one of the worst examples of surveillance state was the patriot act, they did not push that as “we will spy on you” they pushed it as “we will keep you safe” THEN THEY SPIED ON AMERICANS

one of the first big online censorship in my memory (I'm quite young tho so i'm sure it wasnt the actual first) is when Tumblr banned porn and basically all female anatomy related content. I remember SWs talking about it and how detrimental it was for them.
