As a midwestern woman. My influence has always been black southern belles. I wanted to be a southern belles so bad. My bf is from Alabama and he told me if I didn’t tell him I was from the Midwest he would have thought I was from the south, despite my accent. He said it was more of my interest and knowledge of African American history, southern black culture, certain mannerisms and etc. I study southern black women and men like school work as a kid and teen. That’s how in love I am with the culture of vintage black woman from the south. The confidence they had/have is illuminating. These are women who loved their blackness. They identified as that and owned it like no other part of America. Where I’m from most of the African Americans despise themselves and others because of their lack of ownership of their identities. Imagine the amount of depression to be around people who do not love themselves or their culture. To be a young black girl and see southern belles was an outlet for me, since of hope and a boost in confidence. God truly blessed women from the south.
