A few well-aimed questions, and you "arrive" at the thing they wanted, now defending it as if it were your own idea. 2.  They agree with you first. "You're so right" lowers the gate, and the real request rides in quietly on the word "and."   Notice the pattern already: none of it pushes. Each move quietly removes a reason to resist before resistance can even form.   3.  They hand you something small. A favor, a gift, an unprompted confession. Suddenly a much larger yes feels like simple fairness. 4.  They name your emotion before you can. "You seem a little stressed." Now you're managing their read of you instead of noticing what you wanted to say. 5.  And the quietest one: they add a soft clock. "Just let me know soon." Barely any pressure, exactly enough that you skip the part where you would stop and think.   The smarter the person, the gentler all of it looks. The best never raise their voice or hand you a villain to brace against. You leave feeling heard. That's the quiet genius of it: a conversation you'd swear was a meeting of equals.   …   So the tell was never going to be in them. It lives in you.   You walk away faintly foggy. A step behind. Over-explaining a decision you can't quite trace back to its start. That fog is the fingerprint they leave.
