My first sponsor told me to reset my days because I was prescribed cough syrup. I had pneumonia.

The happiest people I know and the only ones I’ve known to have sustained recovery are those who have fully participated in a 12 step program. For anyone who sees this and might be struggling - this is just one person’s opinion!

I recommend SMART recovery!! If people are interested in going to meetings, meant to be more inclusive

My last day in NA I told someone these meetings would make me relapse. Left. 9 years sober now and not shaming myself in the process 🫠

It’s not religious but we say the Lord’s Prayer at the end of every meeting

I absolutely will always tell people when they ask how I got sober “AA got me sober, but I quickly realized it wasn’t for me, and I found sober support elsewhere.” I had 3 years in jan. ❤️

When they asked me “What was your part?” Regarding my childhood neglect/abuse -I was done. Duel Diagnosis therapy and SMART Recovery are my ACES!

I had red flags instantly when I tried going. I kept telling everyone that it wasn’t right for me and all they heard was that I didn’t want to get sober. I did a 3 month outpatient program and then continued by reading books by female authors that suffered from alcoholism and visited online groups. Sober 7 years.

Constantly dwelling on my past use. And hearing others trama dump hurt me. I’m done with all that. I’ll just live sober and not focus on the negative past.

Look rehab was great for some things but they had me convinced if I didn’t find a meeting and a sponsor immediately I was going to relapse.

I just hit 18 months, no meetings, barely any cravings. What works is not sitting in shame and regret and thinking about how terrible you were when you were using. It’s about figuring out who you are now and looking forward.

Luckily in 2026 we have groups that are atheist, queer, dual-diagnosis, BIPOC, focused etc. “Take what you like and leave the rest” has been a super helpful slogan for me to focus on the similarities not the differences and stay sober. 🖤

I think the entire philosophy of 12 step could be distilled into 1 worksheet and that could maybe be useful in a recovery setting, if strictly optional.

I’m glad AA works for a lot of people but it just doesn’t work for me - sat there constantly talking or listening about alcohol just made me more depressed and increased my cravings. So I’ve gone sober on my own journey
