Jesus’s final walk to Calvary is traditionally known as the Way of the After being sentenced to crucifixion by Pontius Pilate, Jesus was handed over to Roman soldiers. The execution site was called Golgotha (Aramaic for “Place of a Skull”), known in Latin as Calvary, just outside the walls of Jerusalem. The Beating and the Burden Before the walk began, Jesus was scourged, mocked, and crowned with thorns. Roman custom required the condemned to carry the crossbeam (the patibulum) to the place of execution. We are told in the Gospels that Jesus began carrying His cross but, weakened from flogging and loss of blood, struggled under its weight. The soldiers compelled a bystander, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross behind Him (Matthew 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26). The Crowd The walk was public. Roman crucifixions were meant to be humiliating and serve as warnings. Some mocked Him. Some watched silently. Others wept. The Gospel of Luke records that Jesus turned to a group of mourning women and said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Luke 23:28) Even in suffering, He spoke prophetically and with concern for others.
