Agreed. I’m only interested in AI to the extent it can allow me to do menial, repetitive tasks faster or aggregate and distill data faster. Similar to how the computers and the internet gave us vast amounts of info at our fingertips that we’d otherwise need hours and hours to search for manually in an analog fashion. Oh and in the scientific world, if it can help us solve complex problems and cure diseases/save lives then great. Just keep it away from anything creative or philosophical or having to do with labor or the military.

Still not worth it for the damage it is causing to our world. It is never worth it

My opinion as a researcher is that I’m concerned that students who start in STEM fields will be less likely to stay or be engaged and passionate about the work because AI sort of ruins that neural pathway that makes STEM so satisfying which is that things are really really hard until you work hard to find the solution and then you’ve done it! If students are happy with something being 90% good enough through AI but are unengaged in the process I’m not sure they will stay interested in the material?

THIS!!!!! I have used AI to help with coding & organizing research links or writing footnotes. NEVERRRR to come up with the question I am asking.

fyi the gen ai language model has something called a hallucination effect where it will literally just make stuff up (like fake citations etc.) no matter how much data you give it, so no matter how good it gets/how specific you’re getting, it will still make stuff up.

There’s sometimes more value than people assume in manually doing seemingly menial tasks. The data entry type work as you describe feels like a waste of time and not the creative/subjective part of the job but occasionally along that scenic route we end up finding other useful or interesting info/ideas indirectly. Whether it’s something unrelated you stumble upon when looking for the instagrams or from giving the brain time to breath while doing a low stimulation activity. Though I understand freeing up time can also open doors to more of that too. Additionally there’s brain rotting that can happen from even the non-critical thinking tasks being outsourced. You want to make sure you maintain the skill and fortitude to do menial tasks as well. So even if it’s not all the time, it’s good to eat the vegetable and go gather all the instagram handles yourself everyone in a while just to keep the endurance and patience muscles in tact.

I don’t know why we’re promoting this when we know these ai companies are ruining our society.

i’m curious about the last part. you think the negative impacts of ai outweigh the benefits. at the same time, you use it for convenience. what keeps you using ai?

Yes but AI & ML have been used by data scientists for decades. Data scientists are not going through millions of lines of data themselves.

Hard agree. The only thing I use AI for writing wise is if I need to make something clearer or more succinct, which, im using something like grammarly not ChatGPT

I already depend on tech too much! I haven’t memorized a phone number since middle school. The last thing I want to do is rely on AI for day to day things

Completely agree with you!! Using it as the tool it’s supposed to be - an assistant. People were against calculators, Google.. saying you’re not gonna “have access to them in your pocket” but look! We do! It’s here, and using it correctly shouldn’t be as frowned upon. Overusing and over consuming it should be

I use excel all the time for work and it’s been helpful for figuring out complicated formulas that (for me) are usually time consuming to figure out through googling. it really bums me out to see how reliant people are on AI but there are some ways to use it that are productive and improve your skills

Agree on everything, plus it’s so ingrained in daily life and workspaces these days that I don’t truly believe those who claim to be fully boycotting it. With exceptions, I do think a lot of people are just virtue signaling. I would rather have a nuanced conversation about it, in which we discuss the upsides and downsides of it and collectively agree on using it as little as possible, rather than holding people to an unrealistic standard of purity, which only leads to people lying about their actual usage of it for fear of being judged by others. Mind you, I’m a photographer, so my work is actually among the most at risk from this technology, so I’m really not even trying to defend it lol

I taught high school, had ALOT of esol students very little support staff so i used it to translate exams and then had the ESOL staff check over the work before i gave it to students. You could visibly see how much stress was taken off of those kids shoulders when they got an exam with english and spanish, so that was worth it for me
