@commonchordusa: September 21, 1987. A debut album was released that would redefine rock music. Appetite for Destruction opened with a track that Axl Rose wrote after a homeless man in New York screamed at him: "You know where you are? You're in the jungle baby! You're gonna die!" . That line became "Welcome to the Jungle." Slash wrote the riff in three hours, building on something he'd played while living in his mother's basement. Duff McKagan's breakdown came from a song he'd written at 15 for his punk band The Vains—the first song he ever wrote . The video was rejected by MTV. David Geffen made a deal: air it once at 4 AM on a Sunday. The switchboards lit up. It became MTV's most requested video . The album sold 200,000 copies in nine months. The label was ready to quit. That 4 AM airing changed everything. Today, Appetite has sold over 30 million copies . VH1 named it the number 1 Greatest Hard Rock Song of All Time . Rolling Stone ranks it among the 500 Greatest Songs . It's been streamed over 958 million times . In 1989, U.S. forces blasted it outside the Vatican embassy in Panama to drive out Manuel Noriega—who hated rock and eventually surrendered .
