An unusual occurrence on the pitch at a Colchester United v Brentford match on November 27th 1970 (not 1969 as stated on the video)…. a dog ran onto the field of play during a Fourth Division match at Colchester’s Layer Road ground. With the referee allowing play to continue the dog crashed into Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie’s leg after he had picked up the ball, causing damage to the ligaments in his knee…. for which the dog didn’t even receive a yellow card, despite it being a blatent foul! Unfortunately, and on a more serious note, the ligament damage in Chic’s leg was so severe that the injury effectively ended his professional career. The incident was one of a number which occurred during Brodie’s time with Brentford, which included being struck on the knee by a stone thrown from the crowd, and on another occasion having a hand grenade thrown into his goalmouth by a Millwall fan…. which was later discovered to be deactivated although he didn’t realise that when it landed next to him! Though he managed five further appearances during the second half of the 1970–71 season, Brodie departed Griffin Park at the end of the 1970–71 season, after making 224 appearances during his eight years with the Bees. He was posthumously inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in 2015. #chicbrodie #brentfordfootballclub #1970 #onthepitch #brentfordfc #pitchinvasion #layerroad #thebees #colchesterunitedvbrentford #70 #football #futbol #futebol #voetbal #Soccer #footballislife #thebeautifulgame
