I never put one on and never had a problem. just a gimmick to screw the consumer. these came out in the 2000s and I think went to code in 2006. I think it's just a waste of money.

remember when houses were built without these for ever and ever. Not saying it's not a good idea but houses even today built in the 70s and 80s still don't have these.

It’s not expansion tank. It is shock arrester. And not $10. If you do it yourself, probably going to be around $150.
