@reformedacres: "How do you know the milk is okay & clean to drink?" The short answer, we believe that anything we produce ourselves is going to be better than food from the grocery store 😊 The long answer is...it's all in how we clean our cow prior to milking & how we handle the milk afterwards. Let's talk about it! First, we brush off any loose hair or debris near where we will be milking. We then use hot soapy water to wash her up. We use 2+ cloths for this, because we NEVER put a cloth back into the clean water after it has touched the cow. Then, we use an iodine based dip, leave it on for at least 30 seconds, and wipe it off with clean, dry cloths. We wear gloves for milking, but that's a personal preference to try to keep any germs on our hands away from her. We do the milking, transfer to clean jars, and get the milk very cold as fast as possible. And if we were concerned about cleainless, we would feed the milk to pigs or the garden or pasteurize it (I heat to 180°F when I do this) to make yogurt.
