These Spider Plant babies have been with me for a while, and I’m starting to see a difference between the ones in soil and the ones in water. And honestly… that’s okay. We learn from it. Because fast rooting isn’t the same thing as long-term establishment. If you want to propagate Spider Plants, it’s simple. Just follow a few steps: 🌱 Soil -Remove the babies from the mother plant. The best ones are already showing tiny starter roots. -Mix a well-draining propagation mix that holds some moisture but doesn’t stay soggy. -Fill a small pot with the mix. -Use a dowel (or your finger) to make a hole and set each baby deep enough so it stands upright. -Place in bright, indirect light and water when the soil is about 50% dry. 💧 Water -Remove the babies from the mother plant (again, tiny roots give you a head start). -Cut a small raft from styrofoam — always best to recycle ♻️ -Cut a hole in the raft and insert the Spider Plant baby. -Let it float in a bowl of water. -Top off the water as it drops, and completely change it if it gets cloudy. It’s interesting watching how differently roots adapt depending on the environment. Next step? I might transition one into semi-hydro and see what happens. I water propped a spider plant from one of the residents. It’s been 6ish months and she’s going strong! She doesn’t get natural light either.
