That was a long winded way of saying no it doesn’t prepare them for school

Do the montessori high school students have the option of going to college? Are they set up for that being in the cards for them?

Till everyone has access to public Montessori schools through 12th grade, we (parents) have to think about this. 🤷♀️

This isn’t an answer to the question that was asked, young people are still expected to graduate high school and likely pursue higher education, that part of life. So maybe a better question would be, in preparing students for life, are they also equipped with the tools and skills necessary to earn a degree?

That’s great and all but this thought was why I was behind in math from switching out of this type of schooling. There is a balance.

I do not think the Montessori method works for every child especially beyond the primary years tbh. I know kids who went to our local Montessori school who were very behind in certain areas because it is so child led. I do also know kids who thrived.

The problem is there’s not a lot of Montessori schools beyond about 5th grade level in most places. So yes they have to transition to traditional school so it’s a valid question. One of the many reasons we’re just homeschooling our kids so there’s no transition period but there’s plenty of families that don’t have that option or who still believe a kid has to be in some sort of school setting.

I learned how to read at age 4 in Montessori and also learned multiplication and division in kindergarten as well as all the continents so I was academically ahead when I entered public school for 1st grade… but we also had woodworking, ballet, a pool where I learned to swim, a garden, farm animals, and a kitchen for homemade lunches where parents took turns coming to make fresh meals and we got to help each day.

I use my own children as an example. Both attended Montessori through Lower El and then went public and did beautifully. Montessori gives them the self motivation, organization and critical thinking skills that help them succeed wherever they go AND it helped make them kind, compassionate friends

As someone who switched into traditional in middle school, it was extremely difficult. Yes, there were a lot of skills, especially around developing curiosity and time management that I still take with me as an adult, but I was at a severe disadvantage when I started traditional school and struggled a lot because of the different ways elementary Montessori taught me.

Hot take your experience of 3rd and 4th grade is part of your life! As is preschool. I hate the false binary between “school” and “life”

Maria | Montessori Explained :
all these "school is life" comments literally missing the point 🤣
if Montessori prepares the child for life
and school is a part of life...
then yes, Montessori prepares the child to succeed in school.
We don't teach standardized tests or simply regurgitate what was taught. But we do prepare critical thinking, problem solving, curiosity, and learning how to learn. We prepare for FAR MORE than traditional school 🙃

For most people school is a big part of their experience of life for 1/4 to 1/3 of their lifetime! Some magical separate thing called “life” totally untouched by structural societal forces doesn’t suddenly begin when you’re no longer a student.

When I went to a Montessori school for kindergarten, the learning was very child lead. That ment I read more books because I loved reading and did less math when I realized I hated math. We could essentially pick and choose what we wanted to learn. When I went to public school for 1st grade, I was ahead in reading and behind in math. So, I agree with you but this type of school isn’t for everyone.

You’re a teacher for ages 3-6 right? What would you do or suggest a Montessori teacher to do if a child is struggling to initiate going to the bathroom and not recognizing the need to change after an accident?

As a kid who did it it does help because I understand these things intuitively instead of just the mechanics
