“My Bed” reminds me of Boskovich’s “Electric Fan.” After the artist’s partner died of AIDS, he had no legal right to their shared property since they were not permitted to marry, so his dead partner’s homophobic family cleaned out their whole apartment, leaving nothing but a box fan.

I reject "anyone could make that" as a valid argument against something having value as art. a more difficult/technically demanding piece of art is not inherently "better" than a simpler work.

Counterargument: if that were a movie set, multiple people would be getting paid to gather, arrange, record and maintain placement of everything around that messy bed to emphasize the story being told by the objects/scene.

I have ecology-ish feelings about these competing forces in contemporary art. I wouldn't want to see either fall away, because I think they both push each other to realize unexplored expressive possibilities.

The "what is art" question falls down a lot of weird reductio ad absurdum rabbit holes. If "My Bed" was a hyper-realistic oil painting of the messy bed, there would be no question that it was art. If it was a professionally lit and framed photo, there would similarly be no question. Nor if it were sculpted in clay or built from Lego. But somehow the fact that it is sculpted from the actual objects suddenly makes people question its status.
OTOH, if a messy bed or pile of candy or hand-cranked penny dispenser is art, is the infamous banana taped to the wall? Or the "Take the Money and Run" blank canvas? If those are, is posing three empty Starbucks cups next to each other art? What about just *setting* three cups next to each other? What about a random pile of cups left by different people, none of whom intended to create art?
The line is weird and messy and incredibly subjective.

i love telling the "i could've done that" people to make like nike and do it. if you could've done that, anyone could've done that, then you do it! they never do

so while I like the commentary on mental health and how it can be easily seen and construed in a home environment, I feel like there is something to be said about the art world where an actual person approved paying $150k for basically a messy bed. it is a very skewed system and I understand the anti anti art movement sentiments. but the execution of the piece shown seems like a juvenile meme.

An under-discussed aspect of the „anyond can do that“ argument is that applies to ALL art. Anyone can learn to draw, paint, sculpt etc, there‘s no innate „talent“ there, it’s literally just all about how early you started practicing and how much you kept at it

thank you for introducing me to "my bed". I've been an artist ever since I could remember but recently I've had a really hard time creating - nothing seemed "good" enough. I realize now I kind of lost the whole point of creation and that art is just the meaning found in cause and effect. thank you 🩷

The bed makes me cry. I’ve been that person. And what she did was recreate a moment in time that communicates without words a fundamental human feeling—it is art

I actually love this one. I hate the “anyone can do that” argument. Art isn’t just doing something hard. It’s saying something. It’s the thought process that is artistic, not always necessarily a difficult execution of that message.

I think there’s something to be said for art being thought provoking and placed in a place for public consumption and critique vs art being valuable and selling to private buyers for large amounts of money. It may not be worth it for an individual to purchase something made of everyday objects with very little skill, but it may be worth putting in a museum

i think that stuckism misses the point of what the anti-art movement was doing. the fact that they were putting out pieces that weren't "traditionally skilled" was the entire point

I was so honoured recently when a person said my most recent sculpture ‘Shrine to the Housing Gods’ reminded her of Tracy Emin’s ‘My Bed’. Highlight of my year!!!!

I’ve never heard of this! For my senior thesis in undergrad I did an installation of the seven deadly sins as living room furniture. This reminds me so much of my sloth recliner!

in my opinion its not the object itself that makes something art, instead its the framing that someone 'puts around it'. i can consider a leaf on the ground a piece of art if it speaks to me

Environmental storytelling is a whole field of narrative design, especially in video games. I’ve never seen that art form presented in such a manner as the first piece and I think that’s really cool.

Have you ever read the book Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf? It makes me think of this piece. You never meet Jacob, but learn about him by learning about the history and future of three things in his room and the other people that touched/would touch those things.

whenever I see complaints about artwork selling for absurd amounts of money I just think about how much more effective art could be if it weren't tied to capitalism. like I assume Tracey emin didn't make "my bed" to make $10k, but they need money to live
