as italian, (no one knows we use tones, but not as Chinese style), I could say that tones are very important. but I didn't know that if you used the wrong tone, the Chinese would still understand you (are you sure?) Italian-style tones: we could say that the sentence often changes meaning completely but the components are the same (I go to the sea, it can have different meanings but I always go to the sea).
