Tax is crippling small businesses and individuals. It’s just overwhelming and depressing

I own & run a successful small business and I'm going below the £90k next year after 5 years. I'm not working hard to charge 20% more to customers and when I get near the £90k next year, I'll go on holiday.....the threshold should be £250k!

Alan | Car Remapper :
Remove it completely so everyone pays VAT and levels the playing field, or raise it to something more reasonable like 250k

Exceeding the vat threshold nearly destroyed my business. The government hates growth, ambition and anyone trying to add value to our society.

The threshold is ridiculous it should be up to 150k at least to help small businesses grow

I ensure that my business does not make more than £90k in turnover and will just switch it off completely if I come close to the threshold earlier and use the time to do research and development or go on holiday, it would never make sense to go VAT registered, as it is a service oriented business I don’t buy items that I pay VAT on so I would completely lose 20% from my profits as though INCOME TAX isn’t already enough!!!!

Vat rate 10% and apply it to all businesses

summerbreeze :
why don't they taper it like they do with other income tax? for instance make first 90,000 VAT free, then start charging 10% after 90k-150k. Charge 20% from 151k. This gives small businesses more incentive to grow.

Because you can't make any money once you go vat registered!

Every business should be vat registered from day one that way it’s a level playing field

Why ? VAT is irrelevant. You receive it and pay it out . Your just holding it for 3 months

All my custom is private domestic, I’ve been vat registered twice!! Twice it’s killed my ratio of won quotes & I’ve ended up deregistering. It’s utter utter madness, I had to turn down work most of Dec and all of Jan to stay below it.. they should trail run doubling the threshold & watch the gains made from it

I did so for years, unless you are able to significantly trade above the threshold then it’s not worth working for that little bit extra

It’s a massive jump and vat flat rate scheme is a complete scam it needs a gradual increase

We are being penalised if we work hard and made to deal with more headache by allowing our business to grow organically. Something needs to be done, £90k is too low for businesses. It needs to be raised

It should be charged to every business but at a much lower rate. I am in the service industry and I have to pay the full vat but don’t claim much back due to service - but huge gyms don’t pay vat or pay a really low rate - needs to be a fairer system
