Imo 5 years are alright, it’s the language requirement that should be higher (C1), that is the true test of integration. Someone who cannot speak the language will never assimilate and even the proposed B2 is too low for real understanding of the culture and environment

Keep in mind, while this may sound worrisome, the CDU can’t actually pass this law. First of all, until 2029, it’s literally not possible because they agreed to keep the 5 year rule in the 2025 coalition agreements. Even after the 2029 election, they almost certainly still need the SPD (and maybe even the Greens) in order to form a government; neither party is willing to reverse the 5 year rule. The SPD and Greens spent 20 years working to achieve the faster requirement and it’s a huge part of both parties’ identity, neither would never agree to change it. The only option for the CDU to pass the law is to either make a coalition with the FDP in 2029 (the FDP is so small that they aren’t even in Bundestag right now so this is very unlikely), or they break down the firewall with the AfD (which they won’t do because it would destroy the coalition and the party’s reputation). So don’t stress too much.

First it's not 7 but 8 yrs they want to change it to. Secondly this is just at the CDU party level meaning NOT yet law. Even if they want to change and pass it at law, they first of all have to convince the SPD and has to get voted on. Long story short, not yet law and might not happen any time soon.

years ok but language is horrible for B2. impossible to learn on that level, especially with full time work to pay our 45% taxes!

This information is not exactly right, man. They proposed this as part of a "wish-list" but it's not something they will be able to push since SPD will never agree

That's not fair at all 5 years is more than enough to integrate, the application to come to Germany alone will take you 2 years and probably another 2 for the passport.

I agree with regard to the bureaucratic process. But not with regard to the duration. It would be nonsense to roll that back. We are roughly in line with the European average, and we need immigration. Why should people who want to live here be prevented from voting for another two years?

In Austria 🇦🇹,people needs 6 years with B2, and the last three years needs to work. Or 10 years with B1 and work. 😁
