@st.sisto: Why is this man beating his chest with a jagged stone? This is the Triptych: The Penitence of Saint Jerome, painted by the Flemish artist Joachim Patinir between 1512 and 1515. Patinir, working in Antwerp, was a pioneer in establishing landscape as an independent genre in Western art. In the center, Saint Jerome performs an act of ascetic penance. He uses that stone to strike his chest to conquer worldly temptation. Notice the crucifix on the ground and the jagged rock formation representing the harsh desert wilderness. To the right, a donkey and camel reference the legend of Jerome’s lion recovering stolen livestock from a caravan. The side panels depict the Baptism of Christ and the Temptation of Saint Anthony. Patinir uses the "world landscape" or Weltlandschaft technique. Notice the high bird’s-eye perspective and the atmospheric color shift from the brown foreground to the deep blue distance. This triptych is a foundational work in Northern landscape painting. For the first time, the vastness of nature begins to dwarf the religious figures. This shift suggests that the divine exists within the entire natural world, marking the transition of landscape into a primary artistic subject. #ChristianArt #SacredHeart
